CHAPTER 7

“Really?” For the first time in her life, she could feel herself slipping into that Little headspace in front of someone else. But they still had way too much to talk about, and she needed to stay Big for as long as possible.

“Yes, really. How do you not know how much you mean to me, Tayter Tot?”

“You can care about someone and not want to take on this kind of responsibility. I know it’s a lot, I’m a lot, and I don’t want you to feel like I’m forcing you into something you’re not interested in.”

“Baby girl, do you have any idea how many times I’ve wanted to do exactly that? Just swoop in and take care of you?”

“Ah… no. No, I do not.”

“Well, it’s been a lot. I tried to tell myself you were an adult and you could take care of yourself, but it’s been really fucking hard to keep my distance these past few years.”

“Oh.” An almost painful hope fluttered in her chest. “I didn’t know that.”

“Well, now you know, so you can stop fretting over it. I’ll admit I’m not a hundred percent sure about being called ‘Daddy’, but if it’s important to you, I’m willing to try it.”

“You don’t have to. I shouldn’t have ever called you that in the first place without your consent. I’m really sorry.”

“And I’m starting to see why you got so pissed off by my apology last night.” He flashed her that teasing half-smile again. “Stop saying you’re sorry, Taylor. I’m not upset. You call me whatever you feel comfortable with in the moment, and I’ll let you know if it’s not working for me. Deal?”

“Okay.” Blowing out a breath, she nodded, the simple gesture feeling completely at odds with the wild twisting of her stomach. “Deal.”

“Good girl. Last night I found a pad of paper. Do you know where it went?”

“Uh huh.” Hopping up from the bed, she ran to the small desk where she tried to contain her ‘school supplies’. With the pad and a pen in hand, she returned to her room.

“Perfect. We’re going to write down some rules for you to follow. Starting with being honest. I don’t want any more secrets between us, and I promise never to lie to you, so I expect the same in return. Fair?”

“Yes, um, Sir.” Now that they were just sitting and having a conversation, she couldn’t quite bring herself to call him Daddy. Ian raised an eyebrow slightly but didn’t push the issue.

“Rule number two. No putting yourself down. You are not a disaster, or hopeless, or any of the other things you’ve been telling yourself.”

Warmth filled her belly at his words. “Yes, Sir.”

“Good girl. Rule number three. For the foreseeable future, your alcohol consumption is at my discretion. If you want to drink, you need to ask me for permission.”

“No way!” Permission to drink? Where the hell had he gotten that idea from? Probably from his ‘research’.

“Yes way. You and Noelle drink way too much way too often, and you know it.
